Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great idea. I was just trying to provide some kind of constructive element of simplicity into the design.

If you had a comparison chart of some kind, like you said above, that'd be awesome. I'll probably be referencing your chart often when it comes time to buy a new weapon.

Also, if you end up using JC's methods with all those details and accuracy, please post! It would be great info, I think.

The weight is important. Justin explained what I ment in the difference between whip and flex. Whip being how much it flexes when you swing it hard. Flex being how much it would staticly bend. I think with the both of you working on that these numbers will develop into more meaningfull and usefull numbers, as long as we have a reference point that says how much Flex Rating is to much.

I'm never going to produce a number to measure "whip". There's just too many variables involved with it - how much force is "hard"? How far is it swung? One hand or two? And every game will decide on a different legal FR.

I'm totally willing to keep a list of what games decide to adopt this system and what they decide is legal though.

More numbers. These are for the Iron Liege stuff I received today:

These weapons are, pretty uniformly, very stiff and fairly light. The axes, in particular, are excellent. The only outlier is the mace, and the numbers for that are off largely due to the squishy handle and the difficulty I had clamping it. A squishy handle does make a weapon feel like it has more flex than it really does, though, so that number isn't a huge problem, it's just a little higher than it should probably be.

So, new data.

Some quick observations:

++ Calimacil's hybrid cores are AMAZING. Apparently they're some kinda fiberglass jacketed with a carbon fiber weave, whatever, any weapon made with one is a frickin' bar of titanium. Half an inch flex on a 30" usable length? That's insanely awesome.

++ The Forgotten Dreams weapons are really... meh. Forgotten Dreams is the place to go if you either can't afford Ateliers-Nemesis or Calimacil, or can't handle the weight of an Iron Liege weapon. Forgotten Dreams' biggest asset (other than their enormous product line) is their light weight. 40"+ swords at half a pound? Nuts...

++ Calimacil foam is dense. I can hold one of their swords point down and bounce it off my hardwood floor back into my hand. They're also damn near indestructable - I can smack the corner of a wall and not only is there no damage to the sword - there's no evidence it even hit anything.

++ Ateliers-Nemesis is really the Cadillac of LARP weapons, both in quality and in price. You get what you pay for with these things.

++ The stuff I got from Iron Liege is really a great deal, but I wish he'd advance to using cast rubber for the fiddly bits of his hilts. It's just so much more durable, doesn't show creases, doesn't deform permanently - it's quite superior.

How do you feel about the Epic Armory pieces? They seem to be the only ones making anything resembling a spear.

Their great-length weapons are surprisingly usable. I will recommend them (so far) with no qualms. Their shorter stuff... meh. Quality seems comparable to Eagle Flex, at Forgotten Dreams prices.

I'll soon be placing another batch order from Iron Liege, and it will include daggers, throwing weapons, spears and staffs.
