Production points rules

And I'm here with another new guy question, specifically making sure I'm understanding the rules:

 

For production points, it says you can buy additional production points at a cost of 3c, am I correct in assuming that it means that, should I want to spend the coin:

 

I have 8 production points, leaving what with that and 8c I make my 8 points of alchemicals, and then I could buy another 12, for 36c and then by paying another 12c turn them into another 12 points with of alchemicals? If I wanted to pay 4x the cost?

You do not need to pay additional coin to use the extra production points, the 3c per point covers the cost of production.  So in your example you would pay 36 extra coin for that extra 12 production points (for a grand total of 44 coin with the 8 points of your own being used).
